I Am Not Afraid Of You And I Will Beat Your Ass

前作『サマー・サン』から3年ぶり、皆が待ってたヨ・ラ・テンゴの11thオリジナル・アルバムが登場です。この変テコなタイトルは2005年にNBAのニューヨーク・ニックスの選手だったカート・トーマスが、キャプテンに向けて放った言葉から頂いているそう。ストリングスをフィーチャーした切なめのバラードから、アイラのファルセットがセクシーな美しいラテン調トラックに軽快なロック・チューン、トレードマークのキーボードが怪しく轟くエクスペリメンタルなトラックに夢見心地のインスト、さらにはガレージ・パンク・ナンバーまで、この玉手箱をひっくり返したようなヴァラエティの豊かさ！また、ここ最近の作品ではあまりなかった、アイラのギターが炸裂するオープニングと悼辞を飾る轟音ロック・チューンにもびっくり。ジョージアのヴォーカルには相変わらず和まされます。今回は恒例のカヴァーも無く、全15曲たっぷりヨラテン・ワールドが楽しめます。

ここのところ無敵のヨ・ラ・テンゴ。今回はオープニングから10分を越えるフィードバック・ノイズがファンファーレのように鳴り響き、エクスペリメンタルでファニーなロックンロール・ショウが幕を開ける。ストリングスやホーンを持ち込んで、いつも以上にヴァラエティー豊かなナンバーがズラリ。まるでNRBQやサン・ラー、キンクスあたりを招いたロック・フェスみたい。それでいて尻尾の先までヨ・ラ・テンゴ。傑作です!
