The soundtrack to the documentary Gay Sex in the '70s is a showcase for Mel Cheren's West End, one of the premier disco labels, and it provides a good balance between tracks that have (Loose Joints' "Is It All Over My Face") and haven't (Michele's "Disco Dance") appeared on several like-minded compilations. From Northend's "Kind of Life (Kind of Love)" through Taana Gardner's "When You Touch Me," there are no weak links to be found. Carl Bean's "I Was Born This Way," included at the very end, is present in the form of an updated remix; it's possible that West End's Mel Cheren assumes that anyone with a remote level of interest in the disc already has the original version. It goes without saying that heterosexuals can love this music just as much as their homosexual brothers and sisters. If this should happen to be your gateway to non-mainstream disco -- or, if you find the dialogue sprinkled throughout the set to be irritating -- seek the likes of Larry Levan's Classic West End Records Remixes, Journey into Paradise: The Larry Levan Story, David Mancuso's two double-disc Loft compilations, and Marley Marl's West End Mixtape Sessions, Vol. 1. That's just for starters. ~ Andy Kellman
