Lynn White is well known in contemporary urban blues and soul circles as a powerful vocalist who is as convincing in her way as Bessie Smith was in the manner she articulates love, lust, joy, and pain. Certainly White's records do not tell the entire story, but Greatest Hits from Blues Works offers a fine beginning in 16 cuts. Sultry numbers like "Blues in My Bedroom," "So Good to Be Bad," "Lonely Woman on the Loose," "My Sex Machine," and "Back in the Streets Again" are powerful, convincing, and moving. The members of White's smoking band have been together a while and play like it. Listen to the B-3 attack that undergirds "Draw the Line" (not the Aerosmith song) or the burning horn charts in "May the Best Man Win" and hear for yourself. This compilation will be a fine cruiser or late-night groover for most. And for those who've been curious about her, this Greatest Hits is one package that truly is. ~ Thom Jurek
