So sadly overlooked during their lifetime, My Life Story bade farewell with the superlative Joined Up Talking album, then marked their grave with Sex & Violins, a best-of collection that paints a band that should have been enormous. Forget the sniping criticism that Jake Shillingford and co. simply updated old ABC -- it's true, but since when has that been a crime? From the rambunctious glam hoedown of "12 Reasons Why" to the soaring '60s-isms of "It's a Girl Thing," via "Sparkle," "Strumpet," "The King of Kissingdom" and "If You Can't Live Without Me," Sex & Violins rounds up some of the brightest, brashest and -- when you compare it to what else was going around at the time -- bravest songs of the entire Brit-pop output of the '90s. Running chronologically from early gems "Girl A Girl B Boy C" and "Funny Ha Ha," through to the latter day "Empire Line," the album also picks up a couple of previously unreleased beauties, "Dice Man" and "Here Comes the Big Weekend," and then goes out with an untitled bonus track that you'll recognize instantly, an extended mix of "12 Reasons Why" which is even more gorgeously frenetic than the regular version. With the entire My Life Story catalog having been deleted while the band's dissolution was still hot on the headlines, Sex & Violins is currently the only readily available means of sampling one of the greatest bands the '90s produced. Once you've heard it, though, you'll certainly be clamoring for more. ~ Dave Thompson
