The 50-year limit on copyright for recordings in Europe makes possible the release of unauthorized, unlicensed packages such as this, a three-CD box set of 45 pre-1956 Pete Seeger recordings mastered from old records (or, more likely from the generally good sound quality, other CDs). The running time of 91 minutes is skimpy for such a collection. The randomly sequenced selection includes some of Seeger's earliest recordings with the Almanac Singers in 1941, along with tracks from his earlier Folkways albums such as Darling Corey and Goofing-Off Suite (the latter including banjo instrumentals of music by Irving Berlin and Beethoven). Of course, this material is heard more coherently and in better fidelity on legitimate U.S. albums released by Smithsonian Folkways. This collection has no annotations beyond song titles (some of which are incorrect, e.g., "Liza James" [sic] instead of "Liza Jane") and songwriting credits. If purchased cheaply, it provides a chunk of early Pete Seeger music, but there is less here than meets the eye. ~ William Ruhlmann
