Over the last 20 years Greentrax has established itself as the main voice of Scottish music, whether it's traditional, piping, or singer/songwriters and instrumentalists. So this three-CD birthday celebration is more than justified, and is a reminder of both the range and quality of the label's output. Along with some of the big names in Scots music, like Dick Gaughan, the McCalmans, and Eric Bogle (who's really Australian-Scots) they've fostered young talent like Shooglenifty and Malinky, and played host to the greats like Archie Fisher and Jean Redpath. It's the kind of resume any label would envy, but Greentrax has gone about assembling it quietly. The 59 cuts here do more than lay out a history, they also paint a picture of Scots music as it stands today, and how it's developed since 1986. Label head Ian Green even gets a well -- deserved nod with "Ian Green's Set" from Gordon Duncan, and the groundbreaking Gaelic Women project is represented, as is Catherine-Ann Macphee, who possesses possibly the loveliest Gaelic voice. The fact that there's not a dud among these cuts says less about the cherry-picking than it does about the quality of the music the label issues. ~ Chris Nickson
