Ruth Brown had an amazing string of smash hit singles between 1949 and 1955. In fact, "So Long," Brown's very first recording and the lead-off track of this fine compilation, sparked a run that included "(Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean" and "Teardrops in My Eyes," which topped the R&B charts for 11 weeks. Brown released many fine records in the subsequent decades, but her work from the early '50s remains her most seminal, with her powerful voice belting out slinky blues, rollicking R&B, and simmering torch songs with equal aplomb over classy big-band arrangements. An excellent one-stop sampler of Brown's early gems, JUKEBOX HITS is vintage R&B of the first order.
