During the uptempo and more passionate pieces of Natural Instinct he sounds a bit like McCoy Tyner, while the slower numbers and the many jazz waltzes recall Bill Evans in spots. However, Gardony does not merely copy the past and he puts a lot of his own personality in the music, too. Performing seven originals, a surprisingly intense version of "Motherless Child," and modernized versions of three standards, he interacts closely with bassist John Lockwood and drummer Yoron Israel during an exquisite set that grows in interest with each listen. ~ Scott Yanow
