Recorded in 1972 but not properly released until 2006, Diana Ross's BLUE was originally conceived as an addendum to the former Supreme's starring role as Billie Holiday in the film LADY SINGS THE BLUES. While the soundtrack to the film found Ross delivering pop-centric versions of Holiday's songs, BLUE offers a jazzier take on the material, providing a more appropriate tribute to Holiday's legacy.
Jazz purists may still bristle at the notion of anyone filling Lady Day's shoes, but taken on her own merits Ross delivers some fine performances. The soul singer sounds confident and at ease on Holiday chestnuts like "What a Diff'rence a Day Makes" and "He's Funny That Way," and her vocals are bolstered by some fine backing musicians and top-notch arrangements by the likes of Oliver Nelson and Benny Golson. Reputedly shelved by Motown founder Berry Gordy for commercial reasons, BLUE's appearance some 37 years later should please fans of both Ross and Motown.
