The California hip-hop musician Nathaniel Dawkins has performed under a variety of names in his short career, including stints as part of the duo Emanon and with his band the Breakdown. As Aloe Blacc, he constructs hesitantly rhythmic yet richly textured songs that burst with ideas, incorporating elements of both old-school R&B and the productions of contemporaries like the Neptunes. It's an album of fascinating contrasts. "Long Time Coming" is a cut-and-paste assembly of the classic Sam Cooke song, which Blacc surrounds with disjointed background vocals and ethereal harp; "Busking" is simply a field recording of a song composed while waiting for an L.A. bus; "Nascimento" is a sumptuous, flamenco-flavored love song; and the call-and-response vocal of "Patria Mafia" harks back to the musician's Dominican roots. With its Technicolor sound palette and revelatory outpouring of ideas, SHINE THROUGH recalls the similar flowering of a fertile imagination that was Stevie Wonder's seminal 1972 album, MUSIC OF MY MIND.
