Arranger: Louis Prima.
In the mid-1950s, vocalist/trumpeter Louis Prima developed a Las Vegas stage act that showcased his winning chemistry with his wife, singer Keely Smith. Backed by saxophonist Sam Butera and his band, the Witnesses, the Prima/Smith show, which featured swinging music, sassy songs, and plenty of humorous asides, proved so successful that it garnered the whole ensemble a contract with Capitol Records.
This massive eight-disc box set collects not only Prima, Smith, and Butera's '50s and '60s studio work for the label, but also live recordings and solo outings by the three entertainers. Among the nearly 200 assembled tracks are energetic numbers that mix jump blues, jazz, and early rock & roll to utterly charming effect; classics like "Just a Gigolo/I Ain't Got Nobody," "Jump, Jive, An' Wail," and "Oh Marie" stand alongside Crescent City standards like "Way Down Yonder In New Orleans" and "Bourbon Street Blues." Although many fans will be content with CAPITOL COLLECTORS SERIES, the whittled-down version of this release, this comprehensive set is essential for true Prima diehards.
