This ten-song DVD is a flawed but enjoyable collection of some of the group's better-known videos. It overlaps in part with Universal's four-song Best of the Moody Blues DVD EP, but ranges far wider across the group's history, encompassing songs from the 1960s and 1970s as well as the 1980s. The disc opens with the group's award-winning video for "Your Wildest Dreams" but then jumps back to "Question," which is not shot to the 1969 original but synced to a newer rendition; the video itself makes extensive use of vintage film and television clips that only intersect with the song in general terms but are diverting enough as an assembly of visuals. From there the disc bounces from decade to decade, jumping from "No More Lies" and "Sitting at the Wheel" to "Driftwood," back to "Nights in White Satin" (from the Night at Red Rocks concert), up through "Say It with Love" and then back to "The Voice," before leaping back even further to "Steppin' in a Slide Zone" and closing with "Gemini Dream." The mastering is impeccable, and the volume is set at a nice healthy level, while the audio is clean as well -- but one wonders why Universal didn't make this a truly comprehensive compilation on the group, encompassing the promotional videos for "I Know You're Out There Somewhere" and the others that are absent, as well as offering the extant '60s-vintage performance clips of the band. Indeed, one has to ask why the song listings didn't include references to the albums from which each track came -- you'd think they would want to sell as many CDs as possible, and to promote them (and besides, how much would it have cost for an extra line of copy on the listing for each of the ten songs?). ~ Bruce Eder|
