Since the television series Happy Days, which brought us The Fonz, was based, more or less, on the movie American Graffiti, which spawned an immensely successful soundtrack album made up of post-Elvis, pre-Beatles golden oldies, it only seems appropriate that Happy Days should have a similar collection. In fact, since it was a series, there should be a series of them. And now, due to the reruns of the show on the Nickelodeon cable network, there is. This one contains 13 romantic ballads of the late 1950s and early '60s with the LP-length running time of 34 and a half minutes. Long enough, one supposes, for the intended make-out session, which Fonzie, in his liner notes, gives the listener pointers on. Any album that contains hits by the likes of Fats Domino, the Platters, and James Brown in reasonable fidelity can't be too bad, and this one hangs together at least as well as the average evening set on your local oldies station, without the commercials or (unlike the American Graffiti soundtrack, come to think of it) the screaming deejay. (The album's final track, "The Fonz Song," by the Heyettes, could have been profitably left off.) ~ William Ruhlmann
