Teenager's Holiday collects none of Merle Kilgore's hits, concentrating instead on his earliest country, rockabilly, and pop recordings for the Imperial and Mercury labels from 1954-62. Kilgore's original recording of "More and More" (later a hit for Webb Pierce) is here, as well as an attempt to cash in on the commercial folk craze ("Tom Dooley, Jr."), and a session with Fats Domino's bandleader and producer Dave Bartholomew. In the early '60s, Kilgore went back to making country music, albeit with pop flourishes, and that comprises roughly half of this set. Kilgore was a talented songwriter and an important figure in country music, and his early recordings are interesting from a historical perspective, but Teenager's Holiday chronicles the uneven results of an artist casting about, following trends, and changing styles in pursuit of a hit. ~ Greg Adams
