This brief disc does not include any of the wild recordings the former Eskew Reeder (though even this mysterious figure's former name is in dispute) made for Capitol Records in the 1950s. Instead, this collects Esquerita's last known recordings, from 1965. An introduction by Little Richard--whose shadowy connection to his fellow piano pounder is unclear, though many insist Esquerita taught Mr. Penniman everything he knows--opens the set, which is tamer than his '50s sides, but only slightly less bizarre. Does the title "Mississippi Goddamn" set the tone for you? How about "Wig-Wearin' Baby," then? About as bizarre as early rock ever got, Esquerita was a true original.
