"Old school, new school, it's all the same to me," snarls singer/guitarist Acey Slade on "New Junk," a song from his band Trashlight Vision's debut album, Alibis and Ammunition. And although he doesn't say so, it's perfectly obvious he couldn't care less about genres, either, as he and the band wantonly tear through time and styles, giving punk, rock, and their myriad offshoots a good swift kick in the butt. It's not even worth wasting your time noting inspirations and comparisons -- you'll have no trouble finding them without assistance, beginning with their hard and heavy cover of the Ramones' "Mr. Brain Is Hanging Upside Down (Bonzo Goes to Bitburg)" and ending with the glitter stomp of "Screw Worm Baby." The album's careful sequencing barely veils how eclectic Trashlight's sound really is. In swift succession they move through exhilarating hardcore into anthemic punk rock, across slash-and-burn edgy hard rock, through grindcore and metalcore, and back to end in gloomy post-punk. Occasionally, as on the flashy "Black Apples," they deliriously cross styles, here creating a wildly infectious number that nods to Iggy Pop and rockabilly, and even stuffs in fiery guitar solos. The equally anthemic "Horns and Halo's" begins with ominous orchestral strings, bursts into shout-along new-school punk, then tumbles into goth rock. So, even though the band oozes a screw-you attitude, plays like the world is doomed to explode before the set is done, and fills its lyrics with vicious imagery, the music is determined to please all of the people at least some of the time. No matter what your poison, Trashlight Vision serve it up in all its splendor somewhere on this blistering set. ~ Jo-Ann Greene
