Johnny Cash's three years at Sun Records were arguably the most fruitful of his career. Cash quickly became the Memphis-based independent label's biggest star after Elvis Presley left Sun for RCA, and Cash rose to the challenge by writing and recording a steady stream of classics. Many of Cash's best known numbers were first recorded at Sun, among them "I Walk the Line," "Folsom Prison Blues," "Big River," and "Get Rhythm." Even the throwaways from this period, such as the lovely "Come in Stranger" or the goofy "Straight A's in Love" are great, as are the hits from this period that are not as well remembered, among them "Home of the Blues," "Hey Porter," and "Cry! Cry! Cry!."
These sparely arranged records feature Cash on acoustic guitar and vocals, Marshall Grant on bass, and Luther Perkins on electric guitar, mostly picking out a "boom-chick" bass line on the bottom strings. Occasionally the production gets more elaborate, as on "Ballad of a Teenage Queen," but most often producer Sam Phillips knew well enough to let the power of Cash's writing and performance speak for themselves. As with all Bear Family products, the packaging and mastering on UP THROUGH THE YEARS approach perfection.
