Bronislaw Kaper's score for MGM's The Glass Slipper never got a soundtrack album release at the time of the movie's issue in 1955, so this double-CD set from Film Score Monthly is long overdue, in that regard. The entire score is present, along with Kaper's alternate scorings for various key sections of the movie and a brace of outtakes, all of which fill up the second disc. The music itself is written in a light romantic vein, very appropriate to the fairytale setting of the movie itself (a retelling of the Cinderella story) -- parts of it recall Kaper's score for Lili, also starring Leslie Caron, which had been a hit the previous year, but this is not necessarily a criticism; the melodies are achingly beautiful and hearing them realized in this full orchestral setting transcends any association with the earlier movie. Additionally, it doesn't hurt that the music was conducted by Miklos Rozsa, a good friend of Kaper's whom we normally think of working in the capacity of composer -- Rozsa was no slouch when it came to leading an orchestra, even on other people's music, however, and that comes through here in the beautiful and precise playing. The source tapes have clearly held up well, and there need be no apologies about the sound quality on this set -- and the packaging is also up to FSM's usual high standard, with extensive annotation and lots of photographs. ~ Bruce Eder|
