DJ Kevin Beadle may have made his first impression on jazz audiences when he compiled Blue Note's Capitol Rare series, but The Nu Jazz Generation II has little to do with traditional jazz, contemporary jazz, or even acid jazz. It does have everything to do with heady and soulful house and Beadle shows he knows a winner when he hears it. Beadle offers some of the genre's higher profile tunes (Jazzanova's remix of "What's Your Number," Recloose's "I Can't Take It") next to excellent and less obvious choices. Stephane Attias' "Brazilian Flight Song" sweetly rolls along as its keyboard line sounds like it's being sucked into another dimension. Stereo People's "Stereo" cleverly couples a killer bassline with delicate vocals and Freil's combination of deep house and piano gymnastics is delicious on "West of Motebe." Maintaining a high standard throughout the album, this is a great introduction to the deep and always evolving world of house and broken beat. ~ David Jeffries
