After singer/frontman Roy A. Loney left the Flamin' Groovies in 1971, the band's sound underwent a transformation from the raunchy, Stones-influenced rock & roll they'd mastered with Loney to a carefully crafted power pop influenced equally by British Invasion groups and the jangley sound of the Byrds. The band signed to Sire Records in 1976 and released their three most commercially and critically successful albums. Those three albums, each featuring beautifully remastered sound, are included in the box set BUST OUT AT FULL SPEED: THE SIRE YEARS. SHAKE SOME ACTION, considered by many to be the Groovies' finest moment, and featuring guitarist Cyril Jordan's fine songwriting and Dave Edmunds's excellent production, kicks off the set. FLAMIN' GROOVIES NOW and JUMPIN' IN THE NIGHT, from 1978 and 1979, respectively, are--if not as consistent as SHAKE--spotted with moments of equal brilliance. Lovingly assembled liner notes and packaging make this a must for any Groovies fan, and the collection also serves as a comprehensive introduction to their finest period.
