Additional personnel includes: Jerry Leiber (vocals); Allen Hanlon (acoustic guitar); Sonny Clarke (electric guitar); George Barnes (guitar, banjo, bass); Barry Kessel, Adolph Jacobs (guitar); King Curtis, Gil Bernal (tenor saxophone); Mike Stoller (piano); Wendell Marshall, Ralph Waldo Hamilton (bass); Gary Chester, Jesse Sailes, Joe Marshall, Bernard Purdie (drums); Chico Guerrero (congas). Recorded between 1954 & 1961. This is a definitive Coasters greatest hits album. Of course, it's also a de facto best of Leiber and Stoller, the two legendary songwriter/producers responsible for all the songs here. Interestingly, Leiber has said that his primary songwriting inspiration was not so much teenage culture (although "Charlie Brown" and Yakety Yak" were brilliant distillations of it) but radio plays. For example, the sound effects on "Riot in Cell Block #9" were inspired by GANGBUSTERS, a popular crime series of the early '50s, while "The Shadow Knows" was directly based on the long-running masked superhero serial. In any case, the music here is some of the best first generation rock 'n' roll, with almost every comedic track theatrically sung.
