Includes the 400 page book THE ALAN FREED STORY: THE EARLY YEARS OF ROCK & ROLL. No pop genre has defined what a summer night can be as much as doo wop, with its countless songs about the moon and the stars and the light they cast on the possibilities of romance, and no pop genre has ever had more earthly angels residing per square foot. This four-disc, 100-song collection of New York-based vocal groups has numerous examples of both, including "You're an Angel" (the Continentals), "The Stars Are Out Tonight" (the Teardrops), "Angel Face" (the Neons), "Heaven Above Me" (the Jets), and "Angel in Disguise" (the Inspirations). One had no idea that there were so many angels in New York, or that the night stars were even visible there, for that matter. Also includes a 400-page biography of legendary DJ Alan Freed written by John A. Jackson, which somewhat makes up for the lack of any kind of liner notes. ~ Steve Leggett
