As with his ever-expanding Masada project, John Zorn's cinematic scores keep piling up, each one distinctly different from the last. On this 17th installment of the avant-garde composer/multi-instrumentalist's Filmworks series, Zorn inventively weaves together music for two different documentaries--NOTES ON MARIE MENKEN and RAY BANDAR: A LIFE WITH SKULLS--unveiling some of his most nuanced and subtle material. Although there are noisy moments (the sax-driven chaos of "GoGoGo"), much of this collection is pleasantly subdued, highlighting the delicate guitar work of Jon Madof (MENKEN) and the light percussive interplay between Zorn (on African thumb pianos) and percussionist Cyro Baptista (BANDAR).
