No doubt a few record buyers have snapped this one up for the title alone, expecting a blast of psychedelic ooze only to find something entirely different. Though loaded with titles such as "The Pink Chiffon Tricycle Queen" and "Slow Motion Roast Beef Restaurant Seduction," there's nary a drop of distortion on this home-recorded debut from guitarist William Ackerman. Instead, there is the clean sound of a steel-string guitar playing songs that seem at once familiar and strange: familiar because the music seems to arise out of Appalachian folk, country blues, bluegrass, and a range of other influences; strange because it's none of these, and there's no singing to tell you just what it's supposed to be.
Of course, all that would become clearer in the ensuing years. TURTLE'S NAVEL was the first release on Ackerman's Windham Hill label, and the record's spare, cinematic mood would become the label's trademark. But while Windham Hill may have eventually become enormously successful as the embodiment of new age music, there is nothing contrived about the low-key whimsy Ackerman displays here. Obviously influenced by steel-string pickers like John Fahey and Leo Kottke, Ackerman's music distills these elements into his own personal and evocative statement.
