An 18-track collection of fresh material and new versions of old favorites, PETE is a fine late entry in Pete Seeger's astonishingly prolific career. Opening with the lovely "Well May the World Go," the album charts a varied path, from the social harmony of "My Rainbow Race" and the story song "Huddie Ledbetter"--folksinger Leadbelly's real name--to the valedictory "To My Old Brown Earth." Along the way, Seeger trots out the standard "Kisses Sweeter Than Wine" and a reworking of "Russian Song/Ode to Joy" from his 1955 album GOOFING-OFF SUITE. As always, Seeger is in fine voice, performing with the gentle humor and passionate strength that made him one of the most beloved folk performers of all time.
