When Ray Charles went in to the studio for 1993's MY WORLD, he hooked up with respected pop producer Richard Perry and a myriad of famous names who'd come to pay tribute to this musical giant. As had been the case throughout his career, Charles chose to explore a number of genres in order to avoid stylistic monotony. The title track and "I'll Be There" fuse light hip-hop and contemporary R&B whereas "So Help Me God" and "If I Could" delve into the more familiar terrain of Brother Ray's gospel and vocal roots.
Noteworthy contributions from famous friends and fans include Mavis Staples' background vocals on "Love Has a Mind of its Own," Eric Clapton's tight guitar solo on "None of Us Are Free," and Billy Preston's funky clavinet on "Let Me Take Over." The two biggest highlights of MY WORLD are covers of Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After all These Years" and Leon Russell's "A Song for You," tracks that Charles' phrasing and piano playing make sound like his own. Charles won his 12th Grammy Award for his performance on "A Song for You."
