Mark Turner, relatively unknown to the mainstream jazz audience, quietly made a name for himself in New York's inner circles. From associations with fellow tenor man Joshua Redman, trumpeter Ryan Kisor and guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkle to sessions with legends like James Moody, Jimmy Smith and inclusion in the group TanaReid, he has slowly accumulated a hefty reputation. On his self-titled Warner debut, Turner shows his strength as an improviser and bandleader with great aplomb.
Drawing from the influences of Ornette and Trane, Turner's tenor is strong without becoming sluggish or overpowering. His tone is light but holds water as he glides through melodies like "Lost Ocean" and "Autumn In New York." He is joined by Redman on "327 East 32nd Street," Ornette Coleman's "Kathelin Gray" and Turner' own "Mr. Brown" for a two-tenor exercise in creative teamwork. Other standout performances include the quirky "Magnolia Triangle" and a very Latin version of Coltrane' s "26-2." In addition, Turner's sidemen (Brian Blade, Christopher Thomas and Edward Simon) turn in shining performances throughout.
