Miami native Paul Kelly is a man who had the right sound for the wrong era. He's surely one of Southern soul music's finest exponents, but he fettered about with no-can-do little independent labels for a dozen years before hitching up with Warner Brothers in 1971. The popularity of Southern soul music climaxed in 1968 when Otis Redding's "(Sitting on) The Dock of the Bay" spent four weeks atop the pop charts, and it was downhill from there. Kelly didn't have a chance. His own records flopped, so he hoped others could make them hits. When his buddy Sam Moore (Sam & Dave) turned down his "Stealin' in the Name of the Lord," Kelly decided to record it after all. Recorded at Muscle Shoals and released by the Happy Tiger label in 1970, the rocker critiqued ministers who pimped their congregations. After initial resistance from the church community, it peaked at number 14 R&B and remains Kelly's best-selling record.
Warner Brothers then bought out Kelly's contract and captured his masters too. Those songs, and others he'd record until his four-album Warner run closed in 1977, are included on this twenty-song collection. Most tracks were produced by Buddy Killen, the white soul man who put Joe Tex on the map and later worked with country balladeer T.G. Sheppard. The results carry a light country-blues aroma, often punctuated with a little R&B. Kelly doesn't have the grit of Otis Redding nor the fluidity of Sam Cooke, but what he does own is a lot of feeling and a way of phrasing which sounds more like storytelling than singing. This gift is best exhibited on the gentle "Poor But Proud" and rockers such as "Come By Here," "I'm Into Something I Can't Shake Loose" and "Hooked, Hogtailed & Collared."
Two of the nicest ballads are the previously unreleased "Love For Sale," about a man confusing the comfort of a prostitute with love, and the adultery tale "Stealin' Love on the Side." Since Kelly was never a big record seller and it's unlikely that this set will break any sales records, it's commendable that Warner Archives is releasing this material simply because it's quality music and because there are still some Paul Kelly fans out there. ~ Bil Carpenter
