Ex-Sex Pistols Cook and Jones really had their work cut out for them when, in forming the Professionals, they set out to distance themselves from the fuss 'n' bother of their recent past and establish their musicianly credentials ahead of any headlines. But more power to them, they succeeded with abandon, as this long-overdue 14-track anthology exquisitely reveals. Opening, as did the band's own career, with the debut single "Just Another Dream," The Best of the Professionals is, by necessity, built around their first album alone. Four singles and the LP were all the band managed to cut during its two-year career, as an early lineup shift, an abandoned album, lengthy tours, and sundry record company delays joined a devastating car accident in curtailing what should have been a vibrantly productive union. Nevertheless, there is little evidence of that chaos here, as the immortal roar of Cook and Jones issues forth on track after track, proving that they had just as much to offer as their old mates' public image. ~ Dave Thompson
