The debut album by one of the most intriguing acts ever to cross the border out of Scotland, Scared to Dance was originally released in 1979, close to two years after the Skids formed, and a year after their debut single, "Sweet Suburbia," established them as one of the post-punk movement's most idiosyncratic contenders. Compared to what the Skids in general, and singer Richard Jobson in particular, would go on to wreak, Scared to Dance is a fairly restrained offering, its initial impact owing more to the convoluted rhythms and breakneck vocals that underpinned every chorus. But there was a poetic leaning even then, while guitarist Stuart Adamson was already honing what would eventually become one of rock's most distinctive guitar sounds -- in years to come, U2 would certainly borrow much from the noise of the nascent Skids, including the loping beauty of "Two Hearts Beat as One." The Skids' own "Out of Town" blueprinted that beast five years earlier. In common with most Captain Oi! releases, this long-awaited reissue arrives oozing bonus tracks -- no less than eight additional songs are pinned to the original album, including a couple of 45s ("Sweet Suburbia" included), a bunch of B-sides, and one live firestorm, "TV Stars." And the magic of the first year of the Skids is readily arrayed before you. ~ Dave Thompson
