A victim of its high profile, Gay, Black & Married is a campy little throwaway that sat in the can for ten years. Originally slated for release on My Life With the Thrill Kill Cult's own Sleazebox records, this tribute to the disco age shows every sign of being a mail-order curiosity for the faithful. Production is much thinner than that found on the band's other albums, sometimes even sounding unfinished. There are cheesy attempts to emulate a saxophone with a synth that's not quite up to it and little of that guns-a-blazing aggressiveness that make the Kult's other albums guilty pleasure favorites. The vocoder-heavy cover of "Do You Wanna Get Funky with Me" is fun, "Freaky Fever" is a dreamy kind of frisky, and "One Night Stand" apes the spacey sound of Giorgio Moroder extremely well, but the rest of this concept album piles the camp sky-high on thin music and even thinner lyrics. It's cute at best and quirky enough to intrigue the hardcore fan, but Gay, Black & Married sure smells like a casual, clever side project passed off as proper Kult. ~ David Jeffries
