The German remix collective Jazzanova turns its attention to more folk-oriented material on this 2005 compilation, though its ingenious techniques are still much in evidence. Unlike other remix teams, Jazzanova isn't so much concerned with getting its audience to dance as with skillfully highlighting subtle aspects of its subjects' music--witness its reworking of Fleckfumie's cover of Nick Drake's "From the Morning," with its bubbling synth line and ethereal vocal. The sound sculptors' version of Chungking's Mellotron-laced "Making Music" mixes Beatles and Portishead influences, while New Zealand combo Fat Freddy's Drop's "Based on a True Story" sets the song's jazzy feel against a brooding, ambient background.
