In 2005, Le Chant du Monde honored the memory of guitarist Django Reinhardt with a 52-track anthology using the title Swing from Paris. What distinguishes this entry from several other Reinhardt collections bearing the same title is the chronological presentation and the excellent nature of the choices made when the producers went through Django's extensive recorded legacy looking for the very best examples of his art. This is typical of the Chant du Monde approach; nothing presented here is anything less than superb, and the logical progression from March 16, 1934 to April 8, 1953 literally covers the entire scope of Reinhardt's career, omitting only his early work as an accompanist for pop singers and squeezebox operators. In addition to "Parfum" and three other unaccompanied guitar improvisations, Reinhardt is heard with the Quintet of the Hot Club de France, and in the company of violinists Stephane Grappelli, Michel Warlop, and Eddie South; with trumpeter Philippe Brun and reedmen Andre Ekyan, Alix Combelle, and Hubert Rostaing, a clarinetist with marvelously modernistic inclinations. Looking for an excellent, comprehensive, wide-ranging but not overpowering Django Reinhardt collection? This might well be the perfect choice. ~ arwulf arwulf
