Though he is perhaps best known as the original leader of the Hawks (who, of course, went on to great acclaim as Bob Dylan's backing band, and later as simply the Band), Ronnie Hawkins has released some fine solo work, yet has never received his just due. The 2006 reissue of 1979's THE HAWK takes a step toward correcting that oversight. Though the album is generally softer and more country-inflected than Hawkins's usual red-hot rockabilly, it pushes the right buttons. "South in New Orleans" starts things off on a rolling Big Easy vibe, and Hawkins continues apace with blues (Willie Dixon's "My Babe"), bluegrass (Bill Monroe's "Blue Moon of Kentucky"), and rock & roll (Chuck Berry's "Let It Rock"). A host of fine session musicians, including guitarist James Burton, harmonica player Paul Butterfield, and the great Hawks/Band keys player Garth Hudson keep things shiny and bright.
