Perry has long been a top-notch bop-based altoist. On Time Flies, he teams up with trumpeter Bobby Shew and a couple supportive rhythm sections that feature pianist Ross Taggart. The repertoire is filled with standards, bop tunes, and viable vehicles for swinging improvisations. Highlights include Shew's "Counting Down," "Love Letters," "Tempus Fugit," and "Social Call." Throughout this exciting live set, P.J. Perry shows that he should be much better known south of the border, for he can hold his own with any American jazz musician. Recommended. ~ Scott Yanow
