Like most of the COMPACT JAZZ series of reissue CDs, Quincy Jones's set is a solid and entertaining, if not particularly inspired, set of familiar tracks from his best-known Verve LPs. Although Jones is best known as an R&B-pop superproducer--Michael Jackson's THRILLER and Lesley Gore's "It's My Party" are both among his credits--he began in the '50s as a composer/arranger in the west coast hard bop school, that groove-oriented subset of jazz that eventually mutated into both soul-jazz and funk. There's plenty of all three on this anthology, which mostly consists of funky, horn-driven medium-to-big-band arrangements of jazz standards. Of the originals, "The Midnight Sun Will Never Set," a contemplative ballad very loosely based on the changes of the traditional Scandinavian tune "Dear Old Stockholm" popularized by Miles Davis, is a highlight, featuring a sweet Davis-like trumpet solo over lush Gil Evans-influenced strings.
