As the title implies, this 2005 Blue Note collection features a set of Lou Donaldson-led songs selected by the artist himself. The resulting compilation spans much of Donaldson's tenure for the label, ranging from an upbeat 1952 take on Irving Berlin's breezy standard "Cheek to Cheek" to a groove-laden '68 rendition of Duke Ellington's "Caravan." In between are many of Donaldson's best originals, including "The Blues Walk," a slinky tune that showcases the saxophonist's deft, smooth playing, and "Caracas," a song that boasts tasteful solos from guitarist Grant Green and charmingly minimal percussion by Ben Dixon. A concise overview of Donaldson's '50s and '60s work, this disc can't be beat.
