The TALKIN' VERVE series is the Verve label's peculiar attempt to direct its legendary catalogue towards, as the liner notes say, "the hipsters of Generation X, with their soul-searching dee-jays and hip-hop style." The notes then link Gilberto to the mid-'90s fads of "lounge" and "exotica," with such phrases as "quite dreadful" and "fascinatingly awful" sprinkled throughout. While this misguided attempt at smirking, so-bad-it's-good cachet might cause Gilberto fans to dismiss the compilation out of hand, the actual music contained here is endlessly fascinating.
TALKIN' VERVE focuses on Gilberto's popcraft and features the singer's remarkable reinterpretations of songs by Chicago, the Association, and Harry Nilsson. The highlight is Gilberto's reworking of the Bee Gees' dirgelike "Holiday" into a dizzying rollercoaster of starts, stops, and hairpin turns. It's a brilliant showcase for Gilberto's dazzling voice, one minute as wispy and flyaway as a little girl's, the next cool and seductive. Trust the singer, not the package.
