Gershwin's sultry and sad music makes a wonderful vehicle for improvisation inside Henderson's arrangements. Along with Henderson's decidedly modern harmonic approach, Stefon Harris' coloristic vibes work, John Scofield's twisted blues guitar and Jack DeJohnette's abstract-but-swinging drumming remind us that this is a nineties telling of the tale. "My Man's Gone Now" is arranged in classic 1960's Henderson style, for a unique upbeat blowing version. Vocal appearances by Chaka Khan and Sting round out this modern interpretation of a Twentieth Century classic.
