After acid jazz and trip-hop introduced many Generation Xers to the previously ignored realm of jazz in the early to mid-'90s, several jazz labels directed reissue series toward this new and unschooled market. Along with Capitol's excellent NOTES FROM THE WEST COAST series of anthologies, Verve's TALKIN' VERVE reissues were the most overtly GenX-oriented series. By far the best of the batch is Roland Kirk's entry, subtitled, with some justification, "The Roots of Acid Jazz." Surely that genre's rabid cross-pollination of pop, world, and jazz styles would have gained Kirk's approval, as would the compilers' decision to include such relative rarities as his drastic rearrangement of "The Peter Gunn Theme" with the Quincy Jones Orchestra and the early out-take "Jive Elephant" instead of endlessly reissued tracks from undeniable classics like RIP, RIG & PANIC. This 15-track, hour-long disc is a fine introduction to Roland Kirk, regardless of one's generational affiliation.
