Billie Holiday, who could turn lesser tunes into poetry, instills these major entries in the collective American songbook with her unique artistry. It was not her first crack at recording many of these numbers, taken from the mid-40s to the late '50s. And though received wisdom claims that her best years were over, comparative listening is instructive and essential to appreciating the breadth of her contribution to jazz. Though it is true that the smoothness was gone from her sound, and in later years she almost always chose a ballad over a swing tune (for sound one might go to Sassy, for technique to Ella's incredible swinging and scatting), but for insightful singing and sheer emotional depth, Billie, at almost any point in her career, is your Lady.
