A super sound it is, with two turntables and a microphone A whoops! Make that two DJs and a sampler. In fact, one of the DJs is a four-time national DMC champion. The nation? Finland. Yep, you heard right--midnight sun, Helsinki Accords, and all that. DJ Slow, Ja Jazz, and James Spectrum make a butt-shakin' sound like a hooked-on-hip-hop Fat Boy Slim or Air with a harder groove.
But they're not that easily pegged down. Vintage bottleneck blues with a lo-fi "Lomax" vibe is featured in "Everybody Pass Me By," while "La Femme," with it's French voice-over, could be an ad for a sleazy phone-sex service. And big bonus points for "Moogjam At Cafe Liberte," wherein a distorted synth wails freely over a 7/8 (dig that!)pulse. But whatever they're layin' down, their forte is a groove deep enough to lose a truck in. That, and their ability to throw a curve when you least expect it.
