For the second in a series of major events culled from a week-long tribute Charlie Haden staged at the 1989 Montreal Jazz Festival, the bassist has released a stunning trio event featuring Paul Bley on piano and Paul Motian on drums. Amongst the three of them, the trio comprises an overview of key developments and artistic breakthroughs that transformed modern jazz in the late 1950s and early '60s.
The midwesterner Haden is best known for his bass innovations in the Ornette Coleman Quartet, but his early connections to Bley are equally important. Bley emerged as a young modernist with a daring harmonic approach through his work with Charlie Parker and Charles Mingus. Bley also played a pivotal role in advancing the modernist approach of the Ornette Coleman Quartet, when he hired them as his band for a club engagement (documented on LIVE AT THE HILLCREST CLUB), and his complex harmonic stylings were a major influence on Keith Jarrett.
Finally, drummer Paul Motian is a master of the displaced rhythm accent, standing percussive cliches on their ear with his out-of-kilter polyrhythms--check out Bley's transformation of Ornette Coleman's dissonant free form theme on "Cross Road" and how Motian answers in kind. A fine leader and composer in his own right, he first attained acclaim through his intuitive responses to pianist Bill Evans and bassist Scott LaFaro. Together, they're capable of shooting out in any musical direction.
