Tenor saxophonist Illinois Jacquet recorded some of his finest early work on Verve in the 1950s, and a sampling of those recordings is presented on this 20-track set. Named after Jacquet's signature swing-boogie tune "Flying Home" (which appears as the last track here), THE BEST OF THE VERVE YEARS features the artist primarily in big-band settings.
Jacquet has a fat tone and an impressive technical range. He also plays with lots of guts, pushing his horn through a variety of approaches from lyrical to aggressive. His conception seems to incorporate swing, blues, bebop, and proto-R&B all at once, and this distinguishing hallmark of his style is evident even on these early sides. Fun, vibrant, and full of life, Jacquet's performances here are bound to please fans or anyone interested in the mainstream jazz of the period.
