Jazz vocalist and songwriter Abbey Lincoln contemplates the subject of love on this intimate 1992 recording, with the help of the extraordinary pianist Hank Jones. The result is a treat for the ears and the soul. With almost five decades of performing under her belt, Lincoln continues to tantalize and amaze with her highly personalized interpretations. She takes her time with her phrasing, pushing, then drawing out syllables behind the beat, and wringing every drop of emotion from each word. Lincoln has an uncanny way of making every tune she sings timeless. Here she mixes originals with standards; her song "Angel Face" sounds like a classic. She sings the hell out of Hoagy Carmichael's "The Nearness of You," the lovely and rarely heard "Black Butterfly" by Duke Ellington, and Sammy Cahn's "I Should Care." Hank Jones performs magnificently throughout, and plays a wonderful stride piano-flavored solo rendition of "Close Your Eyes." This recording is a moving testament from two of jazz's finest artists.
