It's hard not to love the rich, robust sax sound of Coleman Hawkins's tenor, and CONFESSIN': THE ASTOUNDING COLEMAN HAWKINS gives listeners plenty of that sound to love. This is a compilation album that brings together material from two separate studio dates (1954 and 1958), much of which was released on the LPs THE HAWK RETURNS ('54 sessions) and COLEMAN HAWKINS MEETS THE SAX SECTION ('58 sessions). The former is a small combo session with the usual array of blues and standards, while the second emphasizes Hawkins's work with a horn section (and a fierce rhythm outfit that includes guitarist Freddie Green) on big-band style arrangements. Though the pairing may seem odd, there are lots of great performances, and no shortage of impressive solos by the Hawk.
