Released as part of Union Square's Metro Doubles series, the double-disc The Immortal Frank Sinatra: The Voice of the Century is an excellent overview of a pivotal decade in Frank Sinatra's career, 1943-1953. It begins as Sinatra signs to Columbia in 1943, then follows him through his downturn in popularity at the end of the decade, right through the beginnings of his early-'50s comeback on Capitol Records. During these ten years, Sinatra recorded a lot of timeless material so it's easy to nitpick and find great songs missing, but what's here is terrific, featuring classic performances of "Embraceable You," "Nancy (With the Laughing Face)," "Autumn in New York," "My Blue Heaven," "I've Got the World on a String," "My Funny Valentine," "They Can't Take That Away from Me" and "I Get a Kick Out of You," while also tracing the arc of this crucial decade within Sinatra's career. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine|
