In interviews before their debut record, E-nok, one half of Cincinnati rap duo Czar*Nok, referred to his counterpart Holczar and himself as "complete rappers." THAT ONE WAY--its title taken from popular hometown slang for "by any means necessary"--backs up the boasting on a lyrically forceful, remarkably diverse debut.
A slick introduction from legendary screen pimp Goldie himself (in the form of actor Max Julien) leads into the swaggering player anthem "G.A.M.E." with a beckoning falsetto hook and rapid-fire lyrics. Although subsequent tracks bear titles like "Street Money" and "Pimp Tight," there is no descent into a cookie-cutter thug-life album; the latter is a polished, smooth jam with a unique use of vocoder, and the former is an onslaught of potent rhymes. On "Table Dance," the two show their fun-loving side; the Neptunes-style, confectionary club track transforms naturally into the affectionate "She Walks My Way," then into the immense single "Hercules." THAT ONE WAY is a continuously exciting opening salvo.
