After debuting in the mid-'70s with a string of brilliant roots reggae singles, including the classic "Row, Fisherman, Row," and three albums, HEART OF THE CONGOS, CONGOS ASHANTI and FACE THE MUSIC, the Congos disappeared for nearly two decades. In 1997, the group reappeared with NATTY DREAD RISES AGAIN, which was followed by 1999's exemplary REVIVAL. Singers Watty Burnett, Cedric Myton, and Roydel Johnson have the traditional bass-tenor-falsetto harmonies of the classic reggae vocal trio, and as the title suggests, religion never strays far from their lyrical concerns. The fiery "Aaron and Moses" and "Prophets Are Dying" are as passionate and doctrinaire as the best work of the Congos' obvious heroes, Bob Marley and the Wailers. Most importantly, REVIVAL is true roots reggae, bass-heavy and refreshingly free of the electronic gimmickry that mars way too many current reggae albums. Any fan of traditional reggae will find much to admire here.
