This is just a gorgeous DVD from Angel Air in the U.K. including an almost 30-minute long interview with Stan Webb researched and conducted by Steve Johnson (who is also one of the camera people on the full concert) and a ten-page biography/discography as "bonus features," but it is the 11 songs stretched out over about two hours with high production values from producer/director/cameraman Brian Wakerley that give journeyman Webb his due on a gig taped in the summer of 2004 in Lyme Regis, Southern England. The program begins with fan interviews outside of the Marine Theater and drops right into "So Tell Me," Webb just standing and singing like a traditional blues singer, though he's got the guitar strapped on and ready to go with the band vamping on an old standard. He then grabs the instrument and lets out some vintage blues blasts with excellent lighting and impeccable camera work capturing it all for posterity. The interplay between Gary Davies and Webb is so fluid that it makes for a cosmic blend that takes nuggets like "The Thrill Is Gone" and brings them into the space age. The frontman is in great voice, not in a classic sense, but in the way he uses his expression to get the message across with this tight and very creative band that helps the veteran generate the magic. His underrated guitar licks are what the fans have come out for, and they discuss this at the beginning of the DVD. It is those unique riffs that breathe some new life into songs that Chicken Shack's fans have heard for decades. Drummer Mick Jones and Jim Rudge on bass keep a very solid foundation, giving "Spoonful" some room to breathe. Angel Air is truly the label where the artist has a voice and this package has all the elements fans should demand of a DVD, generous bonus material and a killer concert that is just a joy to see and hear. ~ Joe Viglione
